THE HORNED TURNIP
One of a small crop grown in a Warwickshire allotment, 1995. The grower, Mr. K. White, cooked and ate the rest of the crop. He reported the horns as tasting 'spicy'. Horned turnips are not unknown in literature and record.

A 'Devyls Turnype' was presented to Queen Elizabeth I, and Robert Burns wrote a ballad called "Auld Nick's Neep'.

In modern times all sorts of horned vegetables, hoofed carrots, armed potatoes and gilled cauliflowers were displayed for profit as marvels, but have invariably proved fakes.

The last genuine report of a horned turnip was in 1847, again in the English Midlands. A drawing of it appeared in 'Horniblow's Magazine' for April of that year, with a brief note that it was genuine.
